Our History

Inside Our Journey

Cardston Support Services was founded as a nonprofit in 1987 under the name Cardston and District Association for the Handicapped. It started with an educational model in which academics were the focus.  As the program grew and evolved from educational activities to life-skills, recreational and enrichment activities, a movement emerged to update the language used towards those with disabilities. In June 2017, our name officially changed to Cardston Support Services.

In 2004, the Bargain Barn was opened, our thrift store fundraiser. Our programs have always been person – centered. The opening of the Bargain Barn initiated a focus of community involvement and contribution in our programming. CSS has operated the Town of Cardston Recycling program for 19 years. In November 2022, Cardston’s Closet was opened, our used clothing store fundraiser. Opening this program continues to initiate a focus of community involvement. Cardston Support Services has also developed theatrical and athletic programs, including performing full length theatrical productions that highlights both staff and individuals on stage together and Battle of the Agencies, which brings together agencies from Southern Alberta to compete in varied athletic competitions.
